SPM as a classic BW implementation

Hi Folk:

Have any of you been involved in implementing SPM in the classic BW fashion (i.e. no JAVA, standard DSO instead of "direct update" filled by BAdI's).  I am pretty sure a couple of large companies were attempting it a couple years ago, but I have been out of touch with the technology for a couple of years.  Any help, documentation, corporate contacts would be appreciated.
